Depending on where you live, you may have a hard time finding a lobster to keep as a pet. However there are a few places you can start looking.
The easiest place to find a pet lobster is at an aquarium store that sells fish and other animals for home aquariums. Keep in mind that what one pet store might call a lobster, another might call a crayfish.
You can buy a freshwater lobster for your home aquarium. Some examples of freshwater aquarium lobsters are Hammers Cobalt Blue Lobster, White Ghost Lobster and Sunfire Burst Lobster. These varieties tend to be small, but can top out as large as 12 inches long.
You can also buy a lobster for your saltwater tank. These lobsters also tend to be quite small. The average size is about 5 to 6 inches long. Some varieties of saltwater aquarium lobsters are the Red Hawaiian Reef Lobster and the Blue Spiny Lobsters.
Lobsters are often aggressive with other animals and will sometimes eat fish and other small invertebrates. Keep this in mind when adding a lobster to a tank that already includes other animals.
Who hasn’t daydreamed about taking one of those lobsters home from the grocery store and turning it into a pet?
In theory, this is possible, although it is not practical for most people. The equipment needed to keep such a lobster would be large and expensive, and the lobster would require a great deal of care.
You can also catch your own lobster to keep as a pet. This requires some knowledge of catching lobsters, and it is not as easy as it sounds. Before you attempt this, check local laws. There are often strict rules about catching wild lobsters. Some places require a permit, and other places will not allow it at all.
